# 🎤 Lesson Plan — Co-Pilot Lab

> **Ages 11-14 · 45 min · 1 robot per pair · device with microphone**

## 🎯 Objective
Students give voice commands to drive the robot, learn that **speech recognition needs a controlled vocabulary**, and design their own command grammar.

## 🧰 Materials
- 1 Maqueen Lite v4 robot per pair (charged)
- 1 laptop/tablet per pair with microphone (Chrome or Edge)
- A reasonably quiet room
- Optional: printed verb sheet (FORWARD, BACK, LEFT, RIGHT, STOP, FASTER, SLOWER, DANCE)

## 📋 Lesson flow (45 min)

| Time | Phase | Teacher | Students |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-5 | **Hook** | Ask Siri/Alexa to do something silly. "How does it know what you mean?" | Identify keywords vs. full sentences. |
| 5-15 | **Demo** | Open Co-Pilot Lab. Allow mic access. Say "FORWARD", robot moves. Say "Hello robot", nothing happens. | Discuss why only certain words trigger an action. |
| 15-30 | **Exploration** | Pairs connect, try the 8 default verbs, then map their own keywords (e.g. "GO" instead of "FORWARD"). | Build their grammar; find words that fail (homophones, accents). |
| 30-40 | **Challenge** | "Choreograph a dance using only voice — at least 6 commands in a row." | Sequence verbal commands; refine timing. |
| 40-45 | **Reflection** | "Why does the lab work better in some accents/voices than others?" | Discuss bias in AI training data. |

## ✅ Success criteria
- I can drive the robot with at least 4 different voice commands.
- I can map my own keyword to a robot action.
- I can name one situation where voice control would fail.

## 📚 Standards
- **FR Cycle 3** — *Français* : précision de la langue (mots-clés). *EMI* : interfaces vocales et données.
- **FR Cycle 4** — *Tech* : systèmes embarqués qui écoutent. *EMI* : voix, vie privée.
- **NGSS** — MS-ETS1-1 (define design criteria).
- **CSTA** — 2-AP-13 (decompose); 2-IC-22 (collaborate using tools).

## 🚀 Extension
- Combine with **Vision Lab** — voice triggers a "look-around" motion.
- Multi-language test: do French/Arabic commands work too? (They do — try "AVANCE", "إلى الأمام".)
- Discuss: when would you trust a voice-only assistant in real life?
